Marketing and Advertising

Bachelor of Commerce - BCom(Curtin) - MJDU-MKADV

Have you ever wondered what makes people choose certain brands over others? Marketing has one of the most important functions in a successful business. To gain an advantage, companies must differentiate themselves from their competitors. They work out how they may persuade their target audience to buy their product or services.

Marketing is a dynamic blend of:

  • product development and positioning
  • pricing strategies
  • communications and promotion
  • distribution strategies.

Together, these elements are known as the marketing mix and determine the success of an organisation’s brands, products or services.

Marketing suits those who wonder what makes people think and behave the way the do, enjoy working with other people and in teams, have strong organisational skills and want a career that is interesting and diverse. Roles may be in fundraising, market research, product management, marketing communications and brand strategy, and online marketing in areas such as developing online strategy, search engine optimisation, and social media and networking.

Advertising is where art, science and technology collide. It is a stream of storytelling and brand engagement, from social media to television and print. The industry is fast-paced, exciting and highly innovative.

A typical advertising agency is made up of five primary disciplines: account management, planning, media, production and creative. The disciplines work together to deliver effective communications across television, radio, magazines, newspapers, outdoor and online activity. People who work in advertising need to have the ability to find solutions, and to work well and thrive under pressure. Careers in advertising range from account executive, copywriter, media planner, digital account manager and creative director.
